Stephen Swinney, MD, MBA, FACP

Chief Clinical Officer (CCO), Ascension St. Vincent

Dr. Swinney serves as Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension St. Vincent. Dr. Swinney is committed to engaging associates and providers across our statewide ministry to deliver high-quality and safe patient care. He lends his experience and expertise to expand upon our clinical performance strategies and ensure provider satisfaction and collaboration.

He joined Ascension St. Vincent/Ascension Medical Group (AMG) in 1994, most recently serving as Chief Medical Officer/Chief Quality Officer since 2019 and Chief Quality Officer since 2015. Dr. Swinney has held multiple positions during his tenure including Chief Clinical Integration Officer, AMG; Regional Medical Director, AMG; Chairman, Internal Medicine Department, Ascension St. Vincent Hospital; Medical Director, Residency Primary Care Clinics; Assistant Director, St. Vincent Care Management Organization; and Assistant Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is Co-chair of the Ascension Quality and Safety Committee.

Dr. Swinney received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in Science and his Master of Arts in Chemistry at Ball State University. He earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at St. Vincent Hospital. He received his Master of Business Administration at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Swinney is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
